Medieval European literature crosses linguistic and cultural boundaries alike, making interdisciplinary work in the field of medieval studies a virtual necessity. This insight, which is anything but new, is at odds with current research practice, which is for the most part national-philological in orientation. The international conference Common Grounds: Towards a Medieval Comparative Literature taking place in Würzburg from 15 to 17 January 2025 will bring together experts from nearly all language and literature fields in the broader European cultural realm to develop foundations for studies in medieval comparative literature in the framework of interdisciplinary dialogue. (programme attached)
The conference will begin at 6.15 p.m. on 15 January 2025 with the public lecture by the renowned medievalist and comparativist Ardis Butterfield (Yale University) on the subject of “Medieval Comparative Literature and Multilingual Reading”. Online lecture attendance is also possible (see programme for Zoom link).
