The individual projects are divided among three sections:

Section 1: ‘Sign Systems and Medial Transformations’ (director: Prof Dr Jörg Wesche)

Section 2: ‘Anthropology and Knowledge’ (director: Prof Dr Regina Toepfer)

Section 3: ‘Cultural Affiliations and Society’ (director: Prof Dr Peter Burschel)

Whereas the first section, a semiotically and medially oriented working field, is devoted to translation itself, the second section focusses on what translation means for concepts of individuality, images of the human being and epistemology in the early modern age. The third area broadens the perspective to concentrate on the field of interaction between cultural translation and societal change.
